A Touch of Heaven on the Isle of Skye
Believe us, it’s well worth that extra drive from Portree!
The northeast of the Isle of Skye is an exceptionally beautiful and remote part of the island. The journey for most takes a wee bit of effort, but you are amply rewarded as the magnificent coast-hugging road winds up to a lovely old country house magically sandwiched between the mountains and sea. Glowering directly behind the house is the mighty Quairing; out in front is a panoramic view across the water to the Torridon mountains on the mainland. Welcome to Flodigarry Country House Hotel!
The tradition of hospitality dating back over 85 years is effortlessly carried on by Paul and Bette Temming, a terrifically nice Dutch couple who clearly have fallen in love with the place; guests here are welcomed like long lost friends. Everything about Flodigarry is warm and cosy – it’s not trying to be trendy, just relaxed, friendly and welcoming in the great tradition of Highland hospitality. Settle in before the fire with a welcome dram of a magnificently peaty whisky and all troubles evaporate.
In addition to the marvellous scenery, one of the joys of the Isle of Skye is the tremendous seasonal produce. Flodigarry has built close relationships with the local farmers and fishermen and this comes through in the traditional and imaginative dishes served in The High Tide Restaurant. Savouring the local lamb or fish while taking in those amazing sea views is unforgettable. For something more informal, settle into the Flod Bar for some delicious gastro-pub style food accompanied by great local ales.
After enjoying some after-dinner drinks, don’t forget to go outside and look at the stars if it’s a fine night. The complete lack of light pollution makes this one of the most magical places in Britain for star gazing. During the day there are plenty of hiking trails nearby from which to enjoy the local scenery; the Temmings are happy to advise you on the best ones suited for your party.
The atmosphere at Flodigarry tends to be one of perfect peace and tranquillity, the one exception being during the weekend house parties. If a bit of high spirited dancing to live ceilidh bands appeals to you, look into booking your stay for one of those special weekends.
